Posted in All of the Above on October 29, 2010 by Space Gallery SF

Zombie time! The time is almost near… clear away your twinkies and guns. Run for your lives straight to SPACE gallery or else they will eat your  brains!

To get you all pumped on this weekend’s Zombie show, “Just One Bite” we have an interview with the one and only Jason Vivona, whose work and installation horriffiingly electrifies the show with orange neon drips and oozing brains.

ENJOY!

Where are you from? What’s your sign?

I was born in Springfield, MA. Lived in Connecticut and Massachusetts for my formative years, but then gypsied around since. I am a Capricorn.

What’s the method to the madness?

I stain and paint on paper and then draw stuff on it, then I cut it up and sew it together.

What are you drinking right now?

TECATE

Your work is psychedelic, surreal, and a bit abstract. You seem to juxtapose cultural influences with these avant-guard images. Where do these cultural and stylistic inspirations come from?

From all over the place, my brain soaks things up in a weird way, then this stuff just comes out. Plus anything that’s funny to me gets smooshed in there usually. Continue reading

CITY DOLLS

SAN FRANCISCO DESIGNER, BECKY JANE HARRINGTON, JOINS

WITH STYLIST KELLE SCHLAX FOR “CITY DOLLS” FASHION EVENT

Becky Jane Harrington debuts her spring fashion line at Space Gallery, SF

San Francisco, CA – Please join us for City Dolls: a one-night fashion event celebrating vanguard women of the Bay Area’s fashion industry at Space Gallery SF (1141 Polk St. @ Sutter) on November 5, 2010 from 8pm-12am. Admission is free.

The fashion designs of Becky Jane Harrington are an intersection of contemporary practicality and the classic sophistication of the 60s. Becky Jane calls for a return to the fashion ideology of 50 years ago when every garment, accessory, and handbag was paired with intention for a calculated ensemble. This designer cuts her own patterns and hand-sews each garment with intention: the fabric, patterns, colors, pleats, zippers and buttons are mindfully combined for an artful, one-of-a-kind piece. While studying fashion design at San Francisco’s Apparel Arts, Becky Jane’s garments are already due for a winter feature in Bride & Groom Magazine.

Reinterpreting the runway, each City Doll will be displayed in a carefully orchestrated environment where throwback furniture and retro props create a vibrant narrative. Authentic vintage accessories by Cyrstal Arrias, handmade jewelery by Sally Lorenz, and styling by Kelle Schlax foster a rich visual stage for fashion, art, and performance to mingle playfully. Kelle Schlax has 10 years styling experience and has been featured on Bay Area NBC for her fashion show, D-Stricts, at San Francisco’s D-Structure.

Join us on November 5, 2010 from 7pm-midnight at San Francisco’s Space Gallery to celebrate The City’s up-and-coming female artists and their romance with the handmade. City Dolls’ multi-sensory installation includes live dj set by Satans Helpers and textile sculptures by Bay Area artist, Jude Swafford. Admission is free.

Truisms: A tribute to Jenny Holzer – Curated by Joanie Martinez – Space Gallery, SF

Posted in All of the Above on October 12, 2010 by Space Gallery SF

Jenny Holzer is an American conceptual artist that focuses on the obstacles commonly approached in life from power and war to death and violence. Starting in the late ‘70s Holzer compiled a list of “truisms” which she circulated around public spaces.

TRUISMS is a show inspired by artists I have worked with previously, artists whom I have come to respect, and how I see Holzer‘s precedence relevant to their vision. The artists have taken the words of Holzer and reinterpreted them presenting their own approach to the obstacles she has chosen to expose.
